FAA & PHMSA Extend Compliance Date for Air Carrier HAZMAT Passenger Notification Requirements

FAA & PHMSA EXTEND COMPLIANCE DATE FOR AIR CARRIER HAZMAT PASSENGER NOTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Today, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA) issued an Advisory Notice extending the compliance deadline for air carrier hazardous materials (HAZMAT) passenger notification requirements. The Advisory Notice extends the deadline to a date no earlier than January 1, 2014.

On January 19, 2011, PHMSA announced revisions to 49 CFR 175.25 to be effective no later than January 1, 2013.  PHMSA and FAA held a meeting in Washington, DC on August 16, 2012.  The public meeting provided industry stakeholders with an opportunity to submit comments and participate in discussions concerning the acceptability of various means of compliance with federal HAZMAT regulations. In addition, FAA and PHMSA sought input on the anticipated implementation timeline for a standard means of compliance with 49 CFR 175.25 requirements.  As a result of that meeting, FAA and PHMSA announced that they would seek further collaboration from the air passenger transportation community.
