FAA ISSUES AC ON AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF ELECTRONIC FLIGHT BAGS
On October 27, 2017, the FAA issued AC 120-76D on authorization for Use of Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs).
Purpose. This AC provides guidance on the operational use of EFBs and is intended for all operators conducting flight operations under parts 91 subpart K (part 91K), 121, 125, or 135 of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR), who want to replace required paper information or utilize other select applications as part of EFB functionality. It also sets forth means of obtaining FAA authorization for the operational use of EFBs utilizing both portable devices or installed equipment evaluated by the operator as their means to display operating information with an equivalent level of accessibility, usability, and reliability to the means they replace. Although not mandatory and not a regulation, use of the means described in this AC will require that all important respects be followed.
Application. This AC is intended for use by system designers, installers, and operators seeking design and use guidance for hosting EFB applications on both portable devices and installed equipment.
Changes. Changes in this AC include better clarification on the definition on an EFB, the elimination of non-EFB applications, eliminating certain EFB classes, reorganization of EFB application types, providing guidance on starting and managing required elements of an EFB program.
Cancellations. This AC cancels 120-76C, Guidelines for the Certification, Airworthiness, and Operational Use of Electronic Flight Bags, dated May 13, 2014.
